Industrial Humanism:<\/span><\/span> An Anthology of Thoughts, Words, <\/span><\/span>Images,<\/span><\/span> and Innovations<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/strong> is a publishing project by the Pirelli Foundation that documents the extraordinary experiment that was <\/span><\/span>Pirelli.<\/span><\/span> Rivista<\/span><\/span> d’<\/span><\/span>informazione<\/span><\/span> e di <\/span><\/span>tecnica<\/span><\/span>, a magazine published from 1948 to 1972<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span> O<\/span><\/span>ur Historical Archive<\/span><\/span> contains<\/span><\/span> a complete collection<\/span><\/span>, with <\/span><\/span>131 original copies of the magazine, as well as a photographic collection of 6000 images in the form of negatives, slides, colour positive films, and colour and black-and-white prints. The original articles were illustrated by 3500<\/span><\/span> photos, leaving almost 2500 unpublished. Some of these have been selected for the anthology, while others will appear on this site. The articles have been arranged by subject in the book, which starts with a section entitled “<\/span><\/span>Pirelli: Let’<\/span><\/span>s Talk about Us”<\/span><\/span>. A “<\/span><\/span>Tales of Travel<\/span><\/span>“<\/span><\/span> section is devoted to national and cross-border tourism, often in the form of <\/span><\/span>photo reports,<\/span><\/span> or with artists’<\/span><\/span> illustrations, while the world of sport is dealt with in the “<\/span><\/span>news”<\/span><\/span> section on motor racing and football, cycling and sailing. And then there is mass mobility, which is talked about in “<\/span><\/span>Society on the Move”<\/span><\/span>, and the evolution of habits an<\/span><\/span>d consumption, which are investigated in reports on television, education, and the relationship between work and leisure. Over the years, the <\/span><\/span>Rivista<\/span><\/span> witnessed<\/span><\/span> the changes sweeping through Italian and international politics and the economy, scien<\/span><\/span>tific and technological progress, and <\/span><\/span>care<\/span><\/span> for the environment and landscape. The anthology also shows us how editorial policies changed with each editor-in-chief<\/span>,<\/span> from Arturo <\/span>Tofanelli<\/span>, who created and then directed the <\/span>Rivista<\/span><\/i> until 1957 with Giuseppe <\/span>Luraghi<\/span> and Leonardo Sinisgalli, to Arrigo Castellani, and through to Gianfranco <\/span>Isalberti<\/span> in the final period of its history. The book also offers the reader a sweeping overview of the changes in graphic styles, with reproductions<\/span> of the original layouts. Compared with other company house organs of the time, the <\/span>Rivista<\/span><\/i> Pirelli <\/span><\/i>was a case apart right from the first issues. The articles from the Rivista Pirelli <\/em>selected for the book Industrial Humanism<\/em>, some of which are published on this website, are reproduced in their original form, so as to lose none of the colour of the language and the way it changed over the years. Since this is an anthropological collection, some articles have been excerpted, and this is clearly indicated. It has been decided not to intervene in cases where there are editorial differences between one article and another, but only in individual texts, with just a few graphic tweaks to facilitate reading. All the titles have been standardised so as to clearly indicate not only the names of the authors, but also those of the great photographers who, together with famous illustrators, painters, and designers, helped give the pages of the Rivista <\/em>their unique look.<\/p>\n

The illustrations selected for the articles in this publishing project are accompanied by their original captions, while all the illustrations that were not originally in the Rivista <\/em>have explanatory notes and, where applicable, an indication of where they come from in our Historical Archive. The anthology, edited by the <\/span>Pirelli Foundation<\/span>, tells the story of <\/span>Pirelli. <\/span><\/i>Rivista<\/span><\/i> d’<\/span><\/i>informazione<\/span><\/i> e di <\/span><\/i>tecnica<\/span><\/i>, <\/span>which was <\/span>published from 1948 to 1972. A complete collection of the magazine is housed at the<\/span> Historical Archive <\/span>of the Pirelli Group and consists of 131 original issues of the magazine and a <\/span>collection <\/span>of<\/span> about 6000 <\/span>photographs, with <\/span>3500 <\/span>pictures <\/span>that accompanied the original articles and almost 2500 unpublished <\/span>images<\/span>, some of which have been selected for this book. The <\/span>volume<\/span> clearly illustrates<\/span> the multidisciplinary nature of the magazine, which was launched with the decla<\/span>red aim of bringing together <\/span>scientific and technical culture <\/span>with<\/span> liberal culture<\/span>, commissioning articles and investigations <\/span>from<\/span> the most authoritative names of the period. These include<\/span> Dino <\/span>Buzzati<\/span>, Camilla <\/span>Cederna<\/span>, <\/span>Gillo<\/span> Dorfles, Umberto Eco, Carlo Emi<\/span>lio <\/span>Gadda<\/span>, Eugenio Montale, Umberto Saba, Leonardo <\/span>Sciascia<\/span>, Salvatore Quasimodo, Giuseppe Ungaretti, and Umberto Veronesi. The magazine was beautifully illustrated with splendid photo shoots by <\/span>such masters of photography <\/span>as Arno Hammacher, <\/span>Pepi<\/span> Merisio<\/span>, <\/span>Ugo <\/span>Mulas<\/span>, Federico <\/span>Patellani<\/span>, <\/span>Fulvio<\/span> Roiter<\/span>, and Enzo <\/span>Sellerio<\/span> and with illustrations <\/span>by artists like Renato Guttuso, Riccardo <\/span>Manzi<\/span>, and Alessandro Mendini. The preface by Marco Tronchetti Provera and essays by Antonio <\/span>Calabr\u00f2<\/span>, Gian Arturo Ferrari and Ph<\/span>ilippe <\/span>Daverio<\/span>, are followed by an <\/span>anthological section<\/span>.
